You can't see it simply b/c it would take a pretty tall person to see over the microwave - plus I have the shelf stacked with dishes. Most of the weight of a microwave actually hangs on the brackets beneath, not from the cabinet itself. So the shelf is attached to the wall securely through screws and brackets. Then we just treated the shelf like we would a cabinet - we drilled holes in it for the microwave screws and power cord.
