House Tour

Our house was built in the 1950s, and has 4 bedrooms and two bathrooms. We bought it in April, 2011, and it was a foreclosure. It basically had been very neglected for a few years prior to that, but it was a very sturdy and well built house. The house has a lot of “retro charm” that we’ll be embracing as we update and refurbish our home.I will keep this page updated with current photos of each room. This is the very beginning of our journey redecorating and fixing up this home.*Update* We’ve finally moved in! We moved in Friday, June 17, 2011.

Here is the exterior of the home – it’s a cape cod style, so it’s one story in the front and two in the back. Two bedrooms and a bath are on the first floor, and another two bedrooms and a bath are upstairs.

Our back yard goes all the way to behind the shed. We love that it will give us room to garden and play with kids someday, Lord willing!

Here is the living room, which is just inside the front door. The open space above the rafters leads to the second floor hallway and a pair of skylights.  See more about the artwork over the mantle here.

Here is the dining room. All of the carpet hid original wood floors, which we refinished. There were many dark stains (I’d rather not think about what they were) present, but when we refinished them we scrubbed them with bleach and deck cleaner, which helped a lot.  It’s not perfect, but they’re definitely less noticeable now.  You can see more about the free lampshade makeover here.

This is the bathroom on the main floor.  We’re working now on gutting it and completely renovating it!  Very exciting!

This is the front bedroom on the main floor, which is the office.

This is the second bedroom on the main floor. This will serve as the guest bedroom eventually, but is our master for now.  The majority of the improvements in this room have been refinishing the floors and painting the walls.

Next up is the kitchen, real brick and all.  You can see that we’ve painted the brick white, as well as the cabinets.  We’ve also installed all new appliances out of necessity – the old ones didn’t work!  The floors have been painted and stenciled after removing the old linoleum, and we painted the walls as well.

The stairs are off of the dining room and lead to this hallway, which overlooks the living room.

Here is the first upstairs bedroom, which will be the future nursery when the time comes.

This is the upstairs bath. It’s fairly low on our priority list!

Here is the second upstairs bedroom, which is the master bedroom.

This looks like a lot of the houses we have in our area. This gives me hope on how much paint can help. We are dealing with short sales….

Hi – came here from young house love. You have done such great things with your house! The kitchen is so bright and cheery! Have you ever considered removing the shutters from the front of the house? I always think it’s funny when houses have skinny shutters on wide windows – the shutters wouldn’t meet if they functioned!
